The quadratic formula was known to the ancient Babylonians. The mid-sixteenth century saw the claims and counterclaims of Tartaglia, Cardano, and Ferrari for the discovery of the general solution of third and fourth degree equations. It would take a new level of abstraction, the mathematical group and symmetry, to prove that there exists no general solution for algebraic equations of the fifth degree and higher. The outline of that proof was written down the night before the twenty-year-old Evariste Galois was killed in a duel.
Come and explore together the colorful history of the general solutions of algebraic equations and the Galois proof that above the fourth degree such solutions do not exist.
