The Model Guild of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM), the North American Steamboat Modeler’s Association (NASMA), and the Washington Ship Model Society are sponsoring the Maritime Model Expo. In addition to the museum’s 12 exhibit buildings and 18-acre waterfront campus, the Maritime Model Expo offers pond demonstrations, model races, model exhibits, family activities, food, and more. On Saturday, festival-goers can take a Miles River boat ride on some of the museum’s floating fleet of historic vessels for a nominal fee. Saturday also brings the St. Michaels Brew Fest to town, and may be a draw for Model Expo visitors as well.

During the weekend event, radio-controlled (R-C) steamboat modelers will sail model boats in a large, temporary pond, while R-C model sailors race and sail their craft along the museum’s waterfront. Steam-powered and sailing models will be demonstrated throughout the weekend. On Sunday from 11 to 1 p.m., CBMM’s Model Sailing Club will race five-foot R-C skipjack models along CBMM’s Fogg’s Cove. The pond will be used throughout the event for model steamboats and other R-C models—including sailboats, submarines, electrically driven models with modest motors, and self-steered pond sailing models. On-land exhibits will include a collection of models by Washington Ship Model Society members and other highly acclaimed modelers as well.

In addition to radio-controlled operating models and static model displays, the event offers children the opportunity to select, build, color, and sail a simple model boat they can keep for $3. The two-day event is open to the public and free for CBMM members or with general admission.
