Shorelines gently slope down to the water, absorbing wave action, reducing erosion. Many plants and animals live in this wetland zone between high and low tide. Protecting an eroding shoreline with a stone wall or bulkhead was once widespread on the Bay. Unfortunately, their hard vertical walls don’t provide the living spaces that natural shorelines do. This living shoreline—a low stone sill protecting sand and bay grasses—prevents erosion and creates a place where plants and animals can thrive.
