One of Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s biggest fundraisers is the annual Charity Boat Auction, which takes place this year on Saturday, September 2. Donated boats are offered for sale and purchased by the highest bidder. Members are offered an advance preview of all the wonderful boats for sale, both on land and in the water.

Private sailing lessons are offered at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland

What better way to spend a summer evening than watching sailboat races from the beautiful At Play on the Bay Building next to the museum’s jewel, Navy Point? These Wednesday Night Races are a lot of fun — competitive and good-natured from beginning to end. This will be an amazing evening with spectacular views.

The very first exhibition to showcase the black-and-white photography of Robert de Gast, members will have the opportunity to view approximately 80 photographs curated from CBMM’s collection of more than 10,000 by deGast and hear from Chief Curator Pete Lesher. De Gast’s photography gained widespread attention with the publication of his book, The Oystermen of the Chesapeake, in 1970. This stunning exhibit is not to be missed.

Shipwright Educator Matt Engel will offer an overview of CBMM’s Rising Tide boatbuilding program for Talbot County middle school students. Students will be working that day until 5:30, so feel free to arrive a few minutes early to watch them in class. You’re also encouraged to “bring a friend” to introduce them to CBMM membership. There’s no better way to support the Chesapeake Bay than being a CBMM member.

Pete Lesher will present sailor’s valentines-framed items and boxes ornamented with small shells made by Caribbean islanders sold to sailors passing through. CBMM has several collected by Leonard Tawes, a schooner captain from Crisfield. Other tales of Chesapeake Bay romance will be told, as well as a little serenading from a local barbershop quartet.

The 17th National Exhibition of the American Society of Marine Artists Exhibition opens in the Steamboat Building on December 10. Pete Lesher will lead a gallery talk for members highlighting exhibition pieces.

OysterFest is held annually on the last Saturday in October in the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland.Join Hair ‘O the Dog for advice on selecting that perfect wine pairing for Thanksgiving oysters, and find that perfect book about oysters for a Christmas gift.

CBMM Director of Education and Associate Curator Kate Livie will sign copies of her book Chesapeake Oysters: The Bay’s Foundation and Future.
