CBMM Saturdays for Kids
February 16 & 23
10am-12pm for four to six year-olds
1-3pm for seven to nine year-olds
These two-hour classes meet in a special kids classroom. Each day
will feature a different program inspired by one of our innovative
displays, parts of our large campus, or specific historic vessels
in our floating fleet. Classes will include instruction in art and
history as well as science and will incorporate painting, printmaking,
drawing, mixed media and a wide variety of hands-on activities.

Culture & Cocktails on Third Thursdays
February 21, 6-8pm
Boats on Bourbon Street: A Mardi Gras Celebration
CBMM celebrates this annual party with a Chesapeake Bay twist. Sip
traditional Hurricane cocktails while adorning your most amusing
mask. Prizes for the most creative mask will be awarded!!

Lapstrake Skiff Class
February 22, 6-9pm, February 23-24, 9am-5pm
This model boat building class features a wooden rowing skiff with
lapped side planking and a flat bottom. The 10 model is formed
over a frame in much the same manner as a real boat is constructed.
Thin tapered, two-toned toothpicks are used along with fast drying
glue to fasten the models together.

Food for Thought: Lecture Series #1
Shipwrecks, Sea Raiders, and Maritime Disasters along the Delmarva
Coast
March 5, 7pm - SPECIAL EVENING LECTURE!
Underwater archaeologist and author Dr. Don Shomette discusses and
signs his new book about the more than 2,300 vessels claimed by
the waters of the Delmarva coast since 1632. CBMM Steamboat Building.
Cost includes light refreshments after the lecture. You must pre-register
to attend!

Exploring the Museum
March 6 - April 10, Thursdays, 3-4:30pm
$60 includes materials and snack
For grades 1-3
In this after-school series, children will learn about history,
the Bay and more while exploring our interactive exhibits and creating
their own art. This special program is a collaboration between CBMM
and St. Michaels Community Center. All registrations will be handled
through the Community Center.
Chesapeake Bay Folklore, Legends and Ghost Stories
March 8, Saturday, 2-3pm
Join award winning author and storyteller Ed Okonowicz fpr tales
of major historical events and prominent persons along the Chesapeake
Bay and Delmarva Peninsula This program features such tales as Patty
Canons slave kidnappings, Big Lizzs buried Confederate
Treasure, Annapoliss major role in the Civil War, Fort McHenrys
spirited soldiers and tales of decoy carvers and watermen.

Boaters Safety Courses
Course A.) March 11 & 12, 6-10pm
Course B.) March 25 & 26, 6-10pm
Any Maryland boater born after July 1, 1972, is required to have
a Certificate of Boating Safety Education, in order to operate a
vessel. Participants completing the course and passing the test
will receive this Certificate. The course is also recommended for
anyone looking to become a safer, more experienced boater. The course
is offered over two consecutive evenings. Steamboat Building

Lost Towns Project and the Elegant Mansion House of Samuel Chew

Dr. Al Luckebach, Anne Arundel County archaeologist, discusses one
of the largest and most significant Chesapeake buildings discovered

the Environment & Society balances the desire to find cultural
remnants of the past with the need to conserve the environment.

Wye House Farm, Frederick Douglass and the local Community
March 26 at 10:30am
Lisa Kraus examines one of the most significant archaeological projects
in Maryland. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass lived at Wye House
as a child and described it in his writings. CBMM Steamboat Building.
Cost includes lunch following the lecture. You must pre-register

Half Hull Carving Class
March 29 and 30, 9am-5pm
This weekend workshop features instruction on carving a solid half-hull
model of The Pride of Baltimore II. The model is band-sawed
from a two-tone wood block and carved to the rounded shape of the
Prides hull. It is then mounted on a baseboard to form
an attractive wall display piece.

Heritage, Skipjacks, and the Waterman Communities

Michael Paolisso, professor at the University of Maryland, has been
conducting research on the communities of Deal Island, Chance, and
Wenona for many years. This presentation and question and answer
session will focus on issues of identity formation, relationships
between environmental changes and culture as well as the impact
of place on community. Van Lennep Auditorium. CBMM members

Bay Day
April 19, 10am-5pm
The Chesapeakes version of Earth Day. This day-long celebration
features 50 organizations, government agencies, schools and universities,
and vendors with demonstrations, presentations, and information
about the Bays ecology. Sponsored by David Wheeler Cars of
Easton.
The Art and Soul of Sketchbooking
April 21-23, 9am-1pm
Learn the Art and Soul of Sketchbooking from artist
Ritze Miller in this special 3-day workshop! Attendees will create
their own sketchbook and visual record of their surroundings using
pen, watercolor, or colored pencil. For inspiration, she will share
her large and varied personal sketchbook collection. Ritze is a
certified teacher and has been an artist for 25 years. A supply
list will be provided. Exhibits and CBMM Classroom. Limited to 10

Tourism Tales and Chesapeake Heritage

Erve Chambers will discuss how tourism narratives have contributed
to our sense of both the natural and cultural heritage of the Bay.
He will consider how constructed heritages made for tourist consumption
reflect upon, and sometimes conflict with, the more private and
everyday lives of the regions inhabitants. Steamboat Building

Special Members Re-OpeningHooper Strait Lighthouse
May 16, 6-8pm
Be the first to see the re-interpreting of our own Hooper Strait
Lighthouse. The story is a keeper...or about the lighthouse keepers,
more specifically! Through research and rethinking, Museum staff
have re-created the exhibit inside the lighthouse using the stories
of the keepers. This special evening will be set in the 1920s, the
era in which the lighthouse story is set. CBMM members only, free,

5th Annual Maritime Model Expo

Hosted by the Museums Model Guild and the North American Steamboat
Modelers Association, this expo includes radio-controlled models
powered by steam, battery, and wind. Static displays of highly-detailed
and realistic models will be featured, as well as activities for
children, too! Included with Museum admission.
Ecology Cruise

Biologists Bob and A.J. Lipson, authors of Life in the Chesapeake
Bay, explain the ecology of the Miles River aboard the Museums
replica buyboat, Mister Jim. Get close to nature on this
hands-on science cruise. Meet at Admissions Building.

Haunted Lighthouse Tales & Sea Superstitions
May 31, 2-3 pm
Award-winning author and storyteller Ed Okonowicz explores the old
belief that there is a ghost guarding every standing lighthouse.
Shouted warnings,shipwrecks, mysterious piano music, deaths at sea,
apparitions and the effects of deadly storms are all part of this
new program on unexplainable tales told about lighthouses located
around the country.

Star Gazing Cruise

Join us aboard the Museums replica buyboat, Mister Jim
while raising your eyes to the mariners night sky. Delmarva
Star Stargazers representatives will join us on the water as we
discuss constellations, astronomy and celestial events. The entire
family will enjoy stargazing on the Miles River. Meet at Admissions

This annual boat event is the largest of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic
region! It features over 100 antique and classic boats, boatbuilding
demonstrations, maritime craft vendors, live music, food, and more.

Big Band Night

Come hear jazzy big band sounds come alive on the Museums
Tolchester Beach Bandstand. Stay into the evening to enjoy the St.
Michaels fireworks over the Miles River. $10, $5 members.
Chesapeake Folk Festival

Explore and enjoy first-hand Chesapeake foodways, traditions, demonstrations,
music, and crafts. Get your fill of foods from around the Bay; take
a ride on a skipjack; imbibe wines from Maryland vineyards; meet
our Chesapeake People; and see how boats are restored in our working
Boat Yard.

on the boat of their dreams! Offerings include everything from wooden
rowing skiffs to classic sailboats and modern power cruisers. Included

The Boating Party

Be a part of the Museums fall gala fundraiser! In its 11th
year, the Boating Party includes cocktails, dinner, dancing, and
an auction on Navy Point.
Maryland Lighthouse Challenge

6th anniversary Lighthouse Challenge. Participate in Marylands
Lighthouse Challenge by visiting lighthouses around the state. Stop
by CBMMs own Hooper Strait Lighthouse! For more information,

26th Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival
October 4, 10am 5pm
One of the nations premier small craft events! Hundreds of
amateur and professional boat builders and enthusiasts come from
all over the region to display their skiffs, kayaks, and canoes.
Take part in demonstrations and workshops, or simply chat with the
owners and watch these one-of-a-kind vessels race. Included with
Museum admission.
CBMM Members Day
October 18, 10am 4pm
Special day for our members, in conjunction with the opening of
the special exhibition, The Bay From Above. Boat rides,
kids activities, special programs, refreshments.
