Winnie Estelle was built in Crisfield, Md., by Noah T. Evans in 1920 and operated on the lower Chesapeake Bay for more than 50 years, carrying fish and oysters purchased directly from watermen and taking them to city markets or to big seafood packing houses for sale. Rosie Parks
Rosie Parks, a skipjack, is an example of Maryland’s state boat, once part of the last commercial fishing fleet under sail in the United States. In 2002, the National Trust for Historic Preservation designated skipjacks were designated as one of America’s Eleven Most Endangered Places. Designed specifically for dredging up the vast quantities of oysters found on the Bay’s floor, only a handful of skipjacks continue to work the Bay.

Edna E. Lockwood
Edna E. Lockwood, a National Historic Landmark, and the the last of the historic sailing log-bottom bugeyes, was built in 1889 by John B. Harrison of Tilghman Island. Like Indigenous dugout canoes, which were formed by carving out a single log, a bugeye’s hull is constructed by pinning together nine yellow pine logs. Edna was designed at a time when sawn lumber was difficult to obtain, but since large trees were readily available, boatbuilders used log construction.

Old Point
Old Point, constructed in 1909 from seven pine logs pinned together and hewn to shape, is an example of a boat designed to dredge crabs throughout the winter, one of a fleet of crab dredging boats that operated out of Hampton, Virginia, at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay from the 1910s through the 1960s. From December through March, captains and crews lived on their boats so they could leave early every morning and dredge for crabs all day.
