Through her portrait project, “Her Helm,” photographer Kristin Rutkowski documents boat captains who identify as female to highlight and normalize the women who are active leaders in the boating community.

Traveling throughout the Chesapeake Bay region, Rutkowski photographed 51 women who make their own way on the water, following uniquely different paths. In this exhibition opening artist talk, she will share the background to “Her Helm” – how it started, what it meant to the women who participated, what it means to society, and some of the insights she learned along the way. The Her Helm book may be preordered here.

This event is generously sponsored by the Upper Shore Regional Folklife Center.
