Welcome aboard the historic skipjack Rosie Parks for the sails to and from the Solomons Maritime Festival, alongside CBMM’s Shipyard staff and volunteers. Along the way, you’ll learn helmsmanship, sail handling, rules of the road, basic navigation using physical and digital charts, sail evolutions and theory, engine operations, vessel anatomy and terminology, skipjack historical developments, and history of the vessel and its builder.
The sail to Solomons Island includes van transport back from the Calvert Marine Museum, while the return trip includes a van trip to Solomons Island to begin the day. The vessel is capped at six students per sail.
For the Solomons Maritime Festival sails, you pick between two travel legs with specific sailing dates/times and rain dates. Please note that in signing up you agree to the date and rain date. Refunds will only be provided should we cancel the event or plan our departure outside of our rain date.
Physical demands: Participants must be able to endure weather exposure for the entire duration. The vessel has a below decks aft cabin where rest can be had and shelter can be taken from wind and rain, however participants are required to assist and participate in sailing for the entirety of the transit.
Food: Snacks, assorted sodas, water, and coffee will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch and breakfast.
Clothing: Bring layers, rain gear, and a full change of clothes.
Communications: A week before the trip, the captain will email the entire crew with a weather update, further transit details, and additional information
