This is the Boats of the Bay: Log-Bottom Boats Guided Tour. Boats like bugeyes and log canoes were carved from up to nine logs laid side by side. Evolving from indigenous dugout canoe traditions, this construction method resulted in rugged, utilitarian vessels that were completely unique to the Chesapeake. This tour will explore some of the log-bottom boats in CBMM’s collection, as well as CBMM’s shipyard which builds, restores, and maintains these vessels. This tour requires a moderate amount of walking (approximately 1/4 mile) across uneven surfaces, including gravel and boardwalk.

CBMM members become a part of the Chesapeake story and join our mission to preserve and explore the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay region. Not a member yet? Join today!
