Demystifying Wood Technology

Monday & Tuesday, March 2-3 & 9-10 | 5-8pm

Led by Shipyard Educator Walter Atkins over two weeks in March, this engaging introductory course is designed for woodworking students and beginners eager to explore the world of wood technologies. Covering everything from the anatomy of trees to the practical steps of converting logs into quality lumber, the class offers a hands-on and comprehensive approach to understanding wood’s essential properties and their applications in fine woodworking and boatbuilding.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to identify wood species and their properties, mill lumber safely and efficiently and select the right timber for their woodworking and boatbuilding projects. This foundation sets the stage for further exploration, and a deeper appreciation for how wood works.

Topics of focus include:

  • Tree anatomy
  • Milling process: from logs to lumber
  • Grain orientation in milled lumber
  • Steam bending
  • Hand tool usage and simple joinery
  • Shipwright techniques and timber selection

Drawing Boats

Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 21-22

Who doesn’t like to look at boats? Some of us even like to draw them, even if just dreaming….

Join guest instructor Tom Price in the Shipyard on Feb. 21-22 for a weekend class sharing the art of boat design through sketching.

This course will focus on developing an understanding of the naval architects preliminary design process, along with drawing shapely boats.  We will touch on a very subjective examination of nautical aesthetics.

This is a hands-on course for both artists and non-artists in which we will represent a design and then sketch various vessels in CBMM’s collection. Getting the geometry right and “building” your 3D vessel in a 2D drawing will make your appreciation of boats and your sketches more satisfying.

All materials are provided. Dress warmly as we may venture outside!

This program is supported by CBMM’s Regional Folklife Center under the Maryland Traditions program of the Maryland State Arts Council.
