Big things are happening in the Shipyard this weekend! The 1955 skipjack Rosie Parks is getting ready for the sailing season. Stop by the Shipyard March 14–15 to watch the uprigging of skipjack Rosie Parks and see this Chesapeake tradition in action. In this video, Rita & Bob Reaves Shipwright Apprentice Roland Payabyab is aloft, slushing the mast under the direction of Vessel Conservation Manager Sam Hilgartner, to get ready for uprigging. This documentary explores how a man born into slavery in Maryland became one of the most influential voices for democracy in American history. The 57-minute film, executive produced by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Stanley Nelson together with Lynne Robinson, features the voice of acclaimed actor Wendell Pierce as Douglass. The students explored local history, learned about freedom seekers in the Chesapeake, created art, and experienced a day of hands-on learning outside the classroom with our educators and volunteers. We loved welcoming these students to share these important stories told across campus, including a stop in our new special exhibition "Bear Me Into Freedom: The Talbot County of Frederick Douglass."
