Crabbing the Miles River
August 29, 2025 @ 5:00 am - 9:00 am

Late summer is the most bountiful time of the year for crabbing on the Miles River. On Friday, Aug. 29, we are pleased to offer morning crabbing on a historic vessel with our knowledgeable volunteer crew.
We will deploy one of two of the most common methods for harvesting crabs on the Chesapeake and its tributaries: the trot line. A trot line is a baited line set and then lifted from shallow bottoms with crabs being harvested using a wire dip net. Expect to learn about the history of crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay, its importance to the culture and economy, how the fishery has defined various traditional vessel forms; and how to bait, set, and work a trotline. Come watch the sunrise over September’s often placid waters on the Miles River with us—and bring a cooler for your harvest.
