Introduction to Decoy Carving
August 8, 2025 @ 5:30 pm - August 10, 2025 @ 4:00 pm

Learn the art of decoy carving with guest instructor Jeff Coats on the weekend of Aug. 8-10. The workshop begins on Friday evening before full-day sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
While these decoys are carved and designed with the intention of being utilized in waterfowling scenarios, they also make great personal works of craft for your own home display and provide a foundation to proceeding with more advanced techniques. We will be carving a contemporary flat bottom, hollow high density cork body with a northern white cedar head. Students will have the option of choosing a Blackduck, Greenwing Teal, or a Canvasback. All supplies and materials will be provided.
About the instructor: Jeff Coats is owner of Pitboss Waterfowl. He is a professional waterfowling guide on the Atlantic Ocean as well as through the Coastal Zone and Chesapeake Bay. Jeff is also a decoy carver and enthusiast, youtuber, and is a USCG-licensed captain
Participant scholarships are available through CBMM’s Regional Folklife Center under the Maryland Traditions program of the Maryland State Arts Council. Email Hilgartner at shilgartner@cbmm.org for more information on scholarship opportunities.
