There are just a few spots left in Vessel Operations 101, happening April 11–12 at CBMM. Join Conservation Shipwright Kaeo Clarke and Capt. Kate Dumhart of the Schooner Sultana for a hands-on weekend learning the fundamentals of seamanship.
You’ll gain experience aboard three different vessels while building real-world skills like docking, line handling, close-quarters maneuvering, man overboard recovery, and VHF basics. Whether you’re new to boating or looking to sharpen your skills, this class is designed to get you comfortable out on the water.

Students got a hands-on introduction to the art and science of wood with Shipyard Educator Walter Atkins.
From milling and grain orientation to steam bending and joinery, they built foundational skills that carry into woodworking and boatbuilding.
Next up in the Shipyard: Joinery 101, May 2–3. Learn to cut box joints and dovetails in this hands-on workshop with instructor Grigg Mullen. No experience needed!

Join CBMM’s Vessel Conservation Manager Sam Hilgartner on May 23 for a one of a kind shipbuilding tour through southern Dorchester County, where some of the region’s most iconic Chesapeake Bay vessels were built. This guided driving experience explores the waterways, towns, and traditions that shaped Bay craft.
Along the way, you’ll connect CBMM’s collection to the places where these stories began, all while traveling through one of Maryland’s most remote and historic landscapes.
