From Talbot County’s waterways to New Bedford’s wharves, Frederick Douglass’ journey to freedom was shaped by maritime knowledge and access.
On Friday, March 20, at 5:30pm, Dr. Timothy Walker will share this history during his presentation "Currents of Freedom: Frederick Douglass, New Maritime Narratives, and the Underground Railroad." Join us in the Van Lennep Auditorium or virtually as we explore how evolving scholarship is reframing the Underground Railroad as a story deeply rooted in the sea.
This Speaker Event builds on the storytelling on view right now in our special exhibitions "Bear Me Into Freedom: The Talbot County of Frederick Douglass" and "Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad."

Bear Me Into Freedom: The Talbot County of Frederick Douglass opens today.
Inspired by Jeff McGuinness’ book and photographs, Bear Me Into Freedom explores how Douglass’ early years right here in Talbot County shaped his life and legacy.
Director of Curatorial Affairs & Exhibitions Jen Dolde shares the story behind the ox yoke on view. Sourced from a Maryland farm for the exhibition, this artifact is not directly tied to Douglass but represents his experiences as an enslaved person on Edward Covey`s Farm and the powerful metaphor he later used to describe enslavement as the “yoke of tyranny."
