The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Shipyard has reached the home stretch of its extensive refit of 1920 Chesapeake Bay buyboat Winnie Estelle.

In our latest video update, Shipyard Manager Robert Lieby highlights the planning and construction of new bulwarks utilizing a hand-drafted design based on historic images of the vessel.

Stop by over the coming weeks to watch our shipwrights bring the plans to life on the venerable vessel’s deck. You may also see our shipwright apprentices at work on bottom and deck caulking, while our team continues preparing the systems for installation.

It’s an exciting time as we make final preparations for Winnie Estelle‘s relaunch later this year. You’re invited to learn more with Vessel Conservation Manager Sam Hilgartner at the next edition of Coffee & Wood Chips on Friday, Feb. 6, at 10am. This in-person program is free for CBMM members and $10 for non-members.

To support Shipyard projects like this one, make a gift to CBMM’s Annual FundYour donations further our mission and help us maintain a tangible connection to the Chesapeake’s rich story of boatbuilding through the incredible work of our shipwrights and apprentices.
